A man who had done no exercise for 10 years and had a bike which was gathering dust in his attic upstairs, started gaining weight quite rapidly over the years, but kept holding himself back when it came to trying to lose weight.
It came to a point where he decided that he needed to do something and quickly, he had an assessment with his local trust to see how bad he had become. To his horror he found out that he had a body mass index of 42 and was classed as being morbidly obese.
This came as quite a shock to Frank he had a 46 to 48 inch waist with these sort of statistics, your health is very much in danger especially from diseases such as diabetes, heart disease etc. during the assessment they told him he needed to lose weight and exercise a lot more.
Frank was quite scared of exercising because he knew now how overweight he was and was worried, that he might cause more problems by doing it during the assessment he, found out also that he had high blood pressure this was quite a cause for concern for Frank.
He says that just by climbing stairs was enough to wind him because, of the amount of extra weight he was carrying, the assessors put him on a 12 week course which was based around the British heart foundations guidelines.
When he turned up on the first day he was told to do 30 minutes of exercise five times a week, when he first started he went out for short outings, and also to track his progress started a blog, just for the other people on his course.
While he was on the course half of the people dropped off of it they weren’t able to keep it up, it when he went to another follow up class he said they were only three left, and then two until eventually after a year he was the only one left.
Despite the fact that he only set his blog up to record his progress it now gets 5000 visitors a month, and is inspiring more people to get fit in his initial 12 weeks he lost two stone or 17 kilograms. As he did more and became more active he started to lose even more weight, eventually as he became more fitter he became a member of the CTC (cycle touring club).
Eventually he got himself down to 15 stones and treated himself to a carbon fibre bike, when things started to ramp up and he did more he was losing about a kilo a week.
Overtime with his new bike he started going for 125 mile runs were as initially he was doing to three miles, this is a very inspiring story for somebody who doesn’t cycle and may want to have a go. Frank is 49 years of age and what a inspiration he is.
