A Healthy Snack
Recently I saw an advertisement for consuming heart healthy nuts. This is a great snack but the problem my clients have with it is that they either eat too many of them or they just don't want the temptation of them in their homes.
I encourage unprocessed nuts and seeds because they are such a healthy snack when consumed in moderation. Here are a few suggestions so you can monitor your portions better:
- Keep a bag of nuts available but put a measuring spoon (one tablespoon) directly in the bag with them. One tablespoon is equal to one serving of fat, about 50 calories for most nuts/seeds. So, depending on your fat allowance, snack accordingly. (Keep nuts in a "safe place" where they are not too assessable or you might nibble on them too often!)
- You can also portion them into individual, appropriate serving sizes ahead of time to take with you or store at home in the freezer/frig (nuts should always be stored in a cool place as they can go rancid very quickly).
- Do not keep a handy open bowl available just so you can grab a handful every time you walk by it (which incidentally is what the advertisement suggests!).
- Combine your nuts/seeds with a nice piece of fresh fruit/veggies and you will probably be more satisfied and you won't be so tempted to eat too many of them.
