Addicted to Food
Maybe it's not entirely your fault that you are overweight. It's not an addiction but it's similar, and with the 67% obesity rate in the US it might seem there's some real significance to Dr. David Kessler's theory of "hyper-eating."
Kessler's research suggests millions share what he calls "conditioned hyper-eating" — a willpower-sapping drive (similar to addiction) into eating high-fat, high-sugar foods even when they're not hungry. This "conditioned hyper-eating" seems to incite eating high-fat and high sugar eating even when you are not hungry. At issue is how the brain becomes primed by different stimuli. Neuroscientists increasingly report that fat-and-sugar combinations light up the brain's dopamine pathway — its pleasure-sensing spot — the same pathway that conditions people to alcohol or drugs."
It's no surprise that the fast food industry and processed food manufacturers have such high sales since most of their foods contain this combination of ingredients (along with excessive sodium which is also addictive to many) and it's no wonder obesity is so epidemic having an overabundance of these types of foods so readily available and convenient and less costly.
But it begs the question how do you overcome this "addiction?" Has anyone overcome fast food eating in particular and how did you do it? Later in the week I'll give you some suggestions to strengthen your willpower in these areas.
